I went home to Ireland for a bit of chillin’. We’re now back out in America to start our tour today. It’s the same show as the one we did in the UK - we’re excited to show it to our American audience!” It’s your first headline show in the States. You must be excited. “It’s pretty exciting as things have been going better than we could have imagined over here. It’s nice to be able to give something back to them after they’ve already given us so much. The venues are a bit bigger out here - I think tonight’s venue holds about 9,000 people. The smallest show is 6,000 and the biggest is 20,000.” You seem to be playing a show almost every night; do you still get nervous?“It does feel like that! When we first started out the thought of getting up on stage freaked us all out. The kind of crowds we get are very, very loud which helps. The bigger the crowd the better really! The noise calms your nerves.” Will your guitar be making an appearance out there as well?“Yes, it will be making an appearance on stage over here as well! Hopefully on next year’s tour we can bring it in a little bit more.” There’s a review of one of your Aussie shows by a fan who got a little too excited… if you catch our drift.“Yes I saw that! We’ve got some great songs that we’re very excited to bring out and can’t wait for the fans to hear. We’re hoping to get it out towards the end of the year.” Are you writing songs for it again? “We’re writing as much as we can for this one. There’s one song in particular that we’re really happy with and we’re recording it very soon. We’ve got a bit of time to get the album done so we’re putting as much into it as possible. Во-первых, необходимо уяснить, что в этом языке существуют глаголы: 1.1. неопределенные (Indefinite), т.е. неизвестно, пьешь ты или нет, 1.2. длительные (Continuous), т.е. ты давно и продолжаешь, 1.3. завершенные (Perfect), т.е. ты либо вышел из запоя, либо уже окончательно напился и вырубился. 2. Во-вторых, существует объективное: 2.1. настоящее (Present) - ваше отношение к спиртному, 2.2. прошлое (Past) - темное или светлое, 2.3. будущее (Future) – то, что нам светит: цирроз, белая горячка и т.д. 3. Теперь все смешиваем. 3.1. Present: 3.1.1. Present Indefinite (настоящее неопределенное), см. выше. I vodka every day. - Я пью водку каждый день. Her name is Julia, she lives in Saint-Petersburg and she has a children's cerebral paralysis. I work with her as a volunteer trying to help her to do her exercises (from the Glen Doman's method). She is so young but already had to fight with this huge problem. She is very cute and very smart. Nothing wrong with her intellect; she can even read already!! She thinks and speaks as a normal kid of her age, is curious about everything, but she cannot walk. She is so young but works as an adult, 9 hours per day, doing her exercises. And she needs our help! Her family tried for a long time to find a way to help their daughter. And they did already a lot!! They found a method what works very well for Julia. They there in The Institute for Achievement of Human Potential in Fauglia (Italy) for a rehabilitation course for children with the same problem. And they see a good result already. They have to continue this course to correct their home program. In a couple of hours Mary and I will begin our journey toward the country of Ukraine in Eastern Europe. Our departure is out of Nashville to Detroit, then to Amsterdam, Kiev, and finally arriving in Donetsk around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. We have been fortunate enough in our last visits to Ukraine to avoid Kiev and fly directly into Donetsk. But as we enter the higher travel season, it’s more difficult to find reasonable ticket prices. Since this is a shorter trip than some of our previous ones to Ukraine (3 months), I could have driven us to Nashville and left the car in long-term parking. But I wasn’t sure the car battery would have started our Pontiac. So Seth has agreed to drive us to Nashville and then pick us up in our car when we return. Our other son, Nathan left Saturday with a group from Freed-Hardeman for a one-week trip to the “City of Children” in Mexico just south of San Diego. My primary purposes for this Ukraine trip is to participate in the 2012 BVBIU graduation exercises, evaluate what we’re trying to accomplish in preacher-training, do some recruiting of new students by visiting some of the churches, and participate in any available teaching opportunities. Also while we’re there, I have some materials I hope to have translated and make available for the Ukrainian brethren in the areas of evangelism and church leadership. If it is possible I will try to keep the daily devos going as much as possible. Some of them may be more like reports as is this one. The success I have doing this will depend a lot upon internet availability and where our travels take us. I feel fairly certain there will not be one sent Tuesday. But there's no question that competing with local gyms and community centers is tough. Whether you're looking for a way to add fitness classes or change up your current roster, it's all about finding what works for your business and listening to clients' needs. Here, three experienced owners share their strategies. Susan JansonKick It Up(1,000 students)Long Beach, CA When Susan Janson opened her studio in 2004, she offered morning fitness classes. But as enrollment and client demand increased, she added evening classes: Zumba, Spinning, yoga and total body strength conditioning. Now, fitness accounts for 45 percent of her studio's schedule. Looking back, Janson would've booked more evening classes from the start. "A trend we noticed was that parents with children over age 7 would work out while their kid was in class," she says. Janson has also noticed that hybrid classes, such as Spin & Lift and Spin 30 & Core are the most popular next to Zumba. As for pricing, Janson researched what gyms were providing and nearly halved the rate. "Requesting $90 to $180 a month didn't make sense for our clientele. We settled on $60 a month for unlimited classes and haven't raised our prices since 2007," she says. Students can also drop in for $5 to $10, or pay $20 a month for one class per week or $40 for two classes. She focuses on family pricing and programming. At 7:45 am on a Wednesday, Lisa Clark’s classroom is flooded with sunlight and filled with nearly 20 freshmen. The students—all of whom are at Clark’s optional “zero period” open rehearsal—are practicing a piece about a pack of lionesses hunting a phoenix. Leaping and running in a large circle around her, the students concentrate on perfecting their arm placement and pointing their toes as they spring forward, trying to avoid colliding with one another. “I love it when you figure it out for yourself!” Clark cheers. Clark’s classroom is the sole dance studio at the High School for Violin and Dance (HSVD), one of four small public schools on the South Bronx Morris campus. The school was founded in 2002, after the Morris HS campus was divided into smaller schools in an effort to improve lagging graduation rates. HSVD was created to provide students with a more intimate learning environment that allows for individualized attention, and to expose minority and low-income Bronx students to the performing arts. (Each of the four small schools has a unique focus, such as developing leadership skills or enhancing cultural awareness.) All HSVD freshmen take violin and dance—the two passions of the school’s founders—and, by the end of their first year, are selected by the performing arts teachers to major in one or both, based on interest and skill level. Clark, the dance program’s head and only full-time teacher, has long been involved with arts education, including work with the New York State Alliance for Arts Education and the Bronx Council on the Arts. She has taught students from various backgrounds, but HSVD provided a new challenge: Students who wish to attend HSVD submit an application (though they don’t have to audition) and most students who enter the school have no formal experience in dance or music. “I am in a community of kids who love hip hop,” Clark says. “I knew they could dance, but I thought they needed to be exposed to a broader, more classical platform as well.” Over the four years she has taught at HSVD, she has developed a rigorous program that both provides technical training and instills a love of dance. In addition to a regular academic course load, freshmen take an hour each of violin and dance four or five days a week. Clark teaches freshmen ballet to provide the groundwork that will help them learn other styles. The students begin at the barre, learning the traditional progression from pliés through battements. By the end of the first month, she says students start to understand the way the steps work together. She then begins talking about placement, balance, timing and vocabulary, and she supplements their physical practice with in-class lessons about dance history, nutrition and stretching. By sophomore year, roughly half of the school’s 259 students have become dance majors and begin a more structured curriculum of lyrical and Graham, Dunham and Horton techniques. With the fundamentals of ballet and modern under their belts, juniors move on to jazz and hip hop, and seniors learn tap, clogging, African and Irish step dancing. Though Clark’s curriculum provides a classical framework, she also emphasizes creativity, particularly with her freshman classes. “I allow them to come in and do their own choreographing because I want to saturate them with dance,” she says. “They can just create. I’m not worried about if their feet are pointed or if their backs are straight.” It is this aspect of Clark’s approach that comes across most clearly in her studio.
